New Year Update

Hi again! Happy late new year! Here we’re still in lock down, and things have been pretty strange.

Since the last update I’ve done quite a lot, and recent projects have pushed me to fix up my old Mixelmagic.com site, so everything has somewhere suitable to live. It’s crazy to think i first used it in 2002. Time flies!

I’ve been spending a lot of my time working on an Amiga CMO spinoff called CMO: Hex Night.. It’s basically a sequel to Zombie Holiday and I eventually intend to have it running on non Amiga systems too. Its great to be able to make something for my favourite retro system though, particularly as the retro computing scene seems to be on the rise!

Francis is waiting for his friends in the bar when disaster strikes! Some sort of magical catastrophe has befallen the town of Gorcester! No time to think! You’ll have to find your friends before setting off on an arduous journey to confront whoever, or whatever is responsible!

There’s a lot of info and screenshots on it’s page, but in short, it’s an action platformer in the vein of Turrican, Ghouls & Ghosts, etc.

Since I posted last, I did the entire of 2020’s October’s art challenges. I’ve made a page containing all of those.

I also entered two pieces (One, Two speedraws) for 10MARC & Pixel Vixen’s Amiga Art Contest 2020.. Its been fun drawing on the Amiga again, too! For Pixel art in certain ways it’s still uniquely qualified.

Twitch

Occasionally I’ve been doing stints where I stream at Mixel’s Lab on twitch, either doing pixel art, occasionally playing games, and sometimes other digital art, usually on the iPad. Feel free to follow me there and you can see what I’m up to.

Visual Novel?

As well as the platform game I’m also, very slowly chipping away at a visual novel that will be multiplatform. It’s currently led on Windows/Mac but the Amiga version may eventually overtake those. We’ll see! A bit more information about that on its project page over on MM.

Comic News

In terms of comics, I’ve started work on a short comic tie in with CMO: Hex Night, and I’m still dipping in and out of CMO: Delusions volume 2. Apologies for the massive delay on that. I hope to have more news on that soon.. Thanks to those of you who’ve bought print issue #1, it means a lot. 😁

Traditional Art?

I haven’t done traditional art in a while, I’ll try to get on top of that soon. Since lockdown started my habits have really been disrupted, I haven’t worked in a dedicated space since I stopped using the studio. It’s been really helpful to occupy myself with massive longer term projects, so things like the month long art challenges, game dev, etc. where the structure comes from somewhere other than myself. Maybe next time an art challenge comes along I’ll set myself the target of doing it all traditionally? That could be interesting!

Patreon

For now I intend to get back to monthly Patreon roundups. With a few more backers I’ll think about starting to post exclusive content, though I’m not sure what exactly that will be yet! The problem with making such a wide range of things is I’d feel dumb putting certain types of stuff behind a paywall. I tend to post work in progress on the Discord and Twitter nowadays. Hmm. For now I like it as a tip-jar type setup, but I really need to figure out what it’s for in future.

To be honest my mental and physical health have been – not always the best, so I’ll consider whatever I get done a success at this point.

I hope you’re all doing well, given the circumstances and see you next time, but hopefully I’ll see you around before then! 🙂

Great to see new people interested in making retro games. 😀 If you’re ever looking for a way to make Amiga games relatively easily (and maybe one distant day Megadrive ones too) I fully recommend Earok’s Scorpion engine..! http://eab.abime.net/showthread.php?t=97450 – best of luck with your future game making endeavours!
